About A1A Surf Time

Experience the Best Fishing in the Area

Surf fishing is an overlooked sport because of the specialized gear and all the spectators. Our poles are sometimes 15' long, and our casting distances of over 100 yards seem impossible. After talking to a tourist who can't believe the pole size and how far I can cast, I sometimes feel like Superman. But it isn't that hard, and I have seen people cast further than I on their first try. The trick is learning how and using the right gear. This is where I come in, a day on the beach can include many things.

A Day at the Beach for the Whole Family

Let's agree: not everyone wants to fish at the beach. So, we now want to think of compromise. Let's take the whole family for a fun trip to the beach. Let me cart the gear, take you fishing, and let the kids have a ball. And you have a relaxing day.

Based out of St Augustine Florida. We travel from Fernandina Beach to St Augustine to Matanzas Inlet and more.

Not only is fishing a thrilling activity, but it also provides an opportunity to take in the stunning natural scenery of the area. Enjoy the beauty of Florida like never before, and our fishing trips allow you to experience the beauty of the Florida Coastline like never before.

Family-Friendly Fishing Adventures

We welcome anglers of all ages and skill levels and pride ourselves on creating a fun and safe environment for families to enjoy a day at the beach together. Our guides are patient and knowledgeable and always happy to help kids learn the basics of fishing. We don't fish for you. We teach you how to fish and recommend what gear you may want to invest in.  We explain the gear, show you how to properly and safely use the gear, and explain saltwater bait and the species that love it.

The Mullet Runs

Depending on weather and water temperatures, the Mullet Runs happen mainly in March & September. They travel South in the fall and north in the spring. Just about every gamefish out there loves mullet and they follow the mullet.

The FISH - Pompano

Considered to be the filet mignon of the surf, the Pampano is a fun fish to target at the beach. Having to exceed 11" fork length to keep, it is an aggressive but fun fish to bring to shore.  Florida state record is 8 lb 4 oz caught on a sand flea. The best months to fish are March & September.

The FISH - Redfish or Red Drum

My all-time favorite is Red Drum, and they are always in the waters here in St Augustine if you know where and when to find them. Great eating fish; the slot is 18 to 27 inches to keep. Why the slot? When the fish reaches 28 inches, they change sex from male to female. So all those bull reds out there are not bulls. They are cows and are needed to keep a healthy population of the species. The best months to fish are March & September, but if you are a patient fisherman and target them, you can catch a red any time of the year.

The FISH - Black Drum

They are here most of the year, Black Drum is fun to catch and good to eat! These fish like to live out past the third bar with the sharks, and learning to cast out there is part of the fun. But, with a chance to get up to a 96 lb catch, it pays to learn how to cast out there.

The FISH - Tarpon

Here is one of Florida's top game fish. They follow the mullet runs and only take live bait. If you are lucky enough to hook one of these ladies, you are in for a ride. With a Florida state record of 243 lbs, they can leap 10' out of the water.

The FISH - Bluefish

If the waters are cold, the bluefish are here in St Augustine. If you fish with cut bait in the winter months, be sure to have steel leaders. Bluefish have razor-sharp teeth, and you must bleed out after catching them. Must be 12" fork length, 3 fish per person, Florida State record 22 lb 2 oz.

The FISH - Whiting (Gulf Kingfish)

Here in the St Augustine surf all year round, you will most likely catch one of these. Up to 18" and rarely over a lb they are good eating and you can take a sack full home. Great for fish "Tacos" I hear.

The FISH - Sharks

** NOTE **      We do not target sharks     ** NOTE**

Since there is always a chance you may hook a small shark, please see the FREE shark permit course to know what species you may encounter and how to release them safely. https://learningmyfwc.remote-learner.net/

Shark species common to St Augustine include Atlantic Sharpnose, Blacktip, Spinner, Finetooth, Blacknose, and Bonnethead. Other species, like Scalloped Hammerhead and Mako, have also been documented farther off the coast of St. Augustine. We do not provide shark trips, but you will unintentionally catch them as we all do. Please catch and release. Sharks are vital to the ocean's health.
